What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

 

 

The Master Cleanse is a dieting program created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941. It's been around for over 1/2 a century now! Also known as the Maple Syrup Diet, the Lemon Cleanse or the Maple Syrup Lemon Cleanse, Burroughs states that it is a detoxification program that aids in the removal of harmful toxins within the body, as well as reducing diet for loss of weight, "a way to cure ulcers and for every kind of disease." It was made popular in Peter Glickman's book, "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days." Peter Glickman's book promoted Burroughs' diet to a modern audience, stating that this diet had the result in "the correction of all disorders."

The Master Diet Cleanse claims to be a way to remove the toxins within a person's body, which in turn helps remove the cravings associated with drugs, tobacco/smoking, alcohol/drinking, and the desire to eat "junk" or unhealthy food.

For a minimum of 10 days, all you do is drink lemonade from fresh lemon or lime juice, mixed with maple syrup, water, and Cayenne pepper. You drink between 6 to 12 glasses of lemonade a day. NO solid food is eaten for the entire length of the cleanse. Though it may sound as a harsh cleansing diet at first, the Master Cleanse Lemonade does contain some essential vitamins and minerals, making the lemonade diet more gentle on the body, and not technically a fast.

Master Cleanse dieters have been known to go up to 45 days of using the Master Cleanse Lemonade, but a minimal of 10 days is required in order to be successful.

Why is the Master Cleanse so popular?

For two reasons: people want to genuinely improve their health, and for those who want to lose quickly. It also helps that many celebrities have endorsed the Maple Syrup diet as well!

Why These Ingredients?

According to Burroughs' book, lemons and maple syrup are used, because not only are they readily available, but they are a rich source vitamins and minerals. In alternative medicine, lemons are also considered a cleansing and healing food.
